Scientific research focuses on optimized snow management, the efficient use of resources, and reducing vulnerability to weather conditions

Against the backdrop of changing snow conditions, the importance of efficient snow management is growing. Scientific research in various fields serves as the basis for measures aimed at optimization. Among other things, SIS coordinates and initiates research on technical snowmaking, snow farming, snow depth measurements, and efficient trail grooming. To facilitate the practical application of this research, it also offers training courses for operators of Nordic sports facilities to teach them about efficient trail grooming.

This practical handbook provides a comprehensive summary of the relevant scientific principles underlying snow and avalanche research and is intended to help reconcile ecological standards with economic constraints. It provides reference information for professionals in the fields of slope grooming, snow management, and ski management, and serves as a training resource and textbook for interested laypeople.

Anyone who grooms cross-country ski trails and winter hiking trails must understand how snow and technology work. Anyone who operates cross-country ski trails, training courses, and competition courses must tailor their work to the needs of their customers. SIS promotes knowledge, experience, and collaboration, and offers training courses on snow management, grooming, cross-country trail planning, and much more for cross-country trail operators, drivers, and fleet managers—from beginners to professionals.

Kurzbeschreibung

The GIS-KliSchee project provides high-resolution data on local snow potential using satellite imagery, climate measurement data, and regional climate model simulations. The data is integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) and linked with information on existing infrastructure, ecological priority areas, and economic parameters. This creates an expert system that enables the preparation of investment decisions and recommends different adaptation strategies based on snow potential. The project promotes the adaptability of winter sports tourism in Germany’s low mountain ranges to climate change and weather variability.
