Since 1995, the Foundation for Safety in Ski Sports has been supporting event organizers and organizing committees in hosting sporting events in an environmentally, socially, and economically responsible manner. It all began with the 1999 FIS Snowboard World Championships in Götschen. The event underwent a comprehensive assessment of its environmental impact, and measures were implemented to ensure environmentally friendly development. Another milestone was the 2005 World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, where, for the first time, an environmental plan was developed to serve as the basis for the preparation, execution, and follow-up of a major event. Since then, SIS has supported ten World Championships as well as one Olympic bid.

Starting with the 2023/2024 season, the DSV has stopped giving out gifts in the VIP tents at its own World Cup events. Instead, it is giving out flower and herb seeds. The funds saved are being channeled into social and environmental projects aimed at the sustainable development of winter sports. Selected projects for the 2023–2024 season included ticket2nature, Bergwaldprojekt e.V., and climate risk analyses at national training centers.

The 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf were not only a major sporting event but also a pioneering example of sustainable event planning. Together with the market town of Oberstdorf and numerous partners, a comprehensive sustainability strategy was developed that takes environmental, social, and economic aspects into account in equal measure. The strategy outlines clear areas of action, each supported by appropriate indicators, and transparently assigns measures to them. Implementation was monitored to ensure compliance.

During the 2024–25 season, pellet heating systems were used to heat the temporary tents at the World Cup events in Ruhpolding, Oberhof, and Schonach. This allowed various tents (press, VIP, teams, fans) to be heated in a climate-friendly manner. The goal for the coming seasons is to expand this system further and optimize its use.
