Athletes from Snowboard Germany and the German Ski Association, coaches and administrative staff from Snowboard Germany traded their boards and skis for shovels and rakes and planted 100 container plants from the Laufen nursery of the Bavarian State Forestry Department in the forest surrounding the Berchtesgaden national training center. About 60 people took part in the effort under the guidance of the Bavarian State Forests, which provided the young trees as well as manpower and expertise. They scrambled up the steep slope, dug holes, and planted the young trees. The goal of the initiative: to rejuvenate and restructure the protective forest above the Christophorus School in Berchtesgaden—and to practice sustainability by leading by example.

Athletes, coaches, and office staff from Snowboard Germany took part in the SNBGER Mountain Clean Up in the mountains surrounding the Olympic training centers in Oberstdorf and Berchtesgaden. At Grasgehren in the Allgäu and on the Jenner in the Berchtesgaden Alps, a total of nearly 50 hardworking volunteers spent two afternoons collecting trash and cleaning up the slopes where they train in the winter. Drink bottles, cigarette packs, tissues, as well as bicycle inner tubes, a car tire, and broken metal parts all ended up in the trash bags.

The goal of the initiative is to raise awareness of the CO₂ emissions generated by the athletes’ travel activities and to make an active contribution to climate protection and nature conservation. All teams and staff members—whether athletes, coaches, medical staff, officials, or administrative staff—receive a calculation of their mobility-related emissions and the corresponding CO₂ equivalent every six months. This results in a personal “climate budget,” which is invested on a voluntary basis in selected projects promoting sustainability, climate protection, and environmental conservation. The project is funded through a partnership model: the athletes themselves cover one-third of the costs, while the association and the Ski Safety Foundation each contribute one-third. This is in keeping with the principle of “Avoid, Reduce, Take Climate Responsibility.”

In July 2025, the Allgäu CleanUP Days took place around the Oberstdorf National Training Center, organized by PATRON e.V. Our Nordic combined teams also supported the project: Together with the SC Oberstdorf youth team, four World Cup athletes (Vinzenz Geiger, David Mach, Wendelin Thannheimer, and Julian Schmid) also took part in the cleanup effort. The event was complemented by a workshop offering plenty of information on waste recycling.

Together with the DSV, our partner M4Energy has launched the "skiEnergy" project to support youth development in clubs.
Here’s how it works:
All ski clubs can register for free. When residential or business customers sign up for an electricity and/or gas contract through the skiEnergy project, they can select one of the registered clubs. This chosen club receives financial support once a year based on the customers’ consumption: for every kWh of electricity consumed, 1 cent (0.5 cents for gas) goes to the selected club. This innovative model is designed to enable ski clubs to fund youth development and sustainable projects.

While snowboarding is widespread in many federal states, systematic training for young athletes has so far been limited to the federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, which are close to the Alps. Added to this are the effects of climate change: the winter season is becoming increasingly shorter, and winters are becoming more unpredictable. On-snow training is shifting more and more to higher-altitude (glacial) regions. The result is increased travel, time, and financial costs for athletes and coaches, which poses a particular challenge in youth elite sports (NWLS). The project aims to answer the following questions:

1. How can young snowboarders still be optimally trained and developed in light of the expected changes due to climate change (a reduced number of on-snow training days)?
2. How can off-snow training be implemented on a broad scale—including in federal states far from the Alps or without snow—while taking local conditions into account?

The “Event Inclusion Manager in Sports” project—or “EVI” for short—opens up more opportunities for people with disabilities in the sports job market and promotes greater accessibility and inclusion in sports. The goal is to integrate people with physical disabilities into sports organizations on a long-term basis. In September 2021, Snowboard Germany hired its first Event Inclusion Manager, and in 2023, it was selected by the DOSB for the second time to fill one of these positions. As a national governing body, SNBGER aims to continue being a progressive pioneer and serve as a role model for other federations. To implement this vision, the EVI project represents a meaningful step in the right direction.

A new era for freestyle winter sports was ushered in this fall in Berchtesgaden: Germany’s first landing bag facility was built at the national training center’s training complex over a four-month construction period. This new facility provides athletes in the Olympic disciplines of slopestyle, big air, and halfpipe with expanded training opportunities. Thanks to the air cushion, athletes can learn and refine new tricks safely and with minimal risk of injury. The landing bag does not require snow and can be used nearly year-round by athletes from the German Ski Association and Snowboard Germany. This represents added value for the training center and youth development—and an important investment toward making training operations independent of snow conditions.

As part of the “Certified Nordic Ski Rental” certification program, SIS has been recognizing ski rental shops that offer high-quality and safe cross-country skiing equipment since the 2013–14 winter season. To receive the certification, businesses must meet a series of requirements, including expert advice, a well-maintained selection of cross-country skis, boots, and poles, as well as professional fitting of the equipment to customers’ individual needs. Additional requirements include the option to exchange rental equipment free of charge, a storage facility for equipment that includes boot drying, the disinfection of ski boots, free ski waxing, and a money-back guarantee.

As part of the “Cross-Country Ski-Friendly Establishments” certification program, SIS has been recognizing cross-country ski-friendly establishments that meet specific quality and safety standards since the 2013–14 winter season. To earn this designation, lodging establishments must meet numerous requirements. These include a lockable ski storage room, a drying room for clothing and equipment, a waxing station, and a willingness to accommodate cross-country skiers even for just one night. In addition, staff must possess specialized knowledge of cross-country skiing, a special cross-country breakfast must be offered, and partnerships with ski schools and ski rental shops are required. In addition to the minimum requirements, at least three additional optional criteria must be met to receive the designation.

As part of the certification program, SIS has been recognizing ski resorts that meet specific quality and safety standards since the 2009/2010 winter season. The certification establishes uniform standards and provides guests with reliable guidance. An inspection committee of approximately 20 members evaluates the resort, a process that can take several days, depending on the size of the area. After a successful inspection, the resorts receive the respective certification for three years. Regular inspections ensure that the criteria continue to be met.

These findings provide an important foundation for future planning and decision-making by various stakeholders, including policymakers, sports associations, the tourism industry, and businesses.

The debate over the effects of snowmaking on vegetation on ski slopes remains a contentious issue even among experts. Since 1988, a long-term study has been conducted on the Kandarhar run (Garmisch-Partenkirchen), where the vegetation was first mapped even before the snowmaking system was built. Using transects, researchers analyzed primarily the nutrient-poor sites. Five years later, the areas—which had since been covered with artificial snow—were re-surveyed, and changes in the plant communities were evaluated. This series of experiments provides new insights for operators and regulatory agencies that are urgently needed for the assessment of planned projects in the Alpine region.

Surveys conducted in ski resorts in the late 1980s, as well as demand from specialty retailers, revealed that when restoring soil damage at high elevations, the seeds used generally do not correspond to the natural species composition. For this reason, seeding trials were conducted to test natural seed mixtures at various elevations and on different soil types. Special experimental plots were established in the Nebelhorn and Fellhorn ski areas near Oberstdorf, and their development was documented over a five-year period. The goal is to provide cable car and ski slope operators with practical guidance on the restoration of soil disturbances.

Building on the numerous environmental studies conducted in ski resorts, an integrated assessment method was developed to evaluate environmental sustainability using transferable criteria. This method takes into account all types of land use and impacts affecting the ski resort. Using geographic information systems, this multi-stage process allows for the derivation and interpretation of detailed analyses, comprehensive visualizations, and assessments. The goal is to obtain transparent results for assessing the ecological stability of ski resorts, to identify areas in need of restoration, and to propose maintenance measures. The method has already been applied in the “Kampenwand” ski resort.

The mechanical stress placed on vegetation by ski edges and snowcats, as well as the high susceptibility to erosion at many sites, often make it difficult to re-vegetate damaged areas in ski resorts. Expensive seeds and mulch layers are frequently washed away by heavy rain. The use of geotextiles has significantly reduced surface erosion. In addition to seeding with various mixtures, the planting of site-appropriate grass sods and combined methods were also tested. The goal of these studies is not only to promote stable but, above all, near-natural plant communities in high-altitude mountain regions. The study was conducted in the ski resorts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and at “Tegelberg.”

The ecological studies are based on a detailed survey of the ski resort, the vegetation, the nature and scope of construction activities, the condition of adjacent forests, damage on the slopes, and summer and winter use. The proposed restoration measures include adapted agricultural use, restoration of damaged areas, improved visitor management in the summer, and gentle slope maintenance. In addition, recommendations are made for the protection of alpine plant communities and valuable biotopes for grouse.

Based on a conflict analysis focusing on wildlife and forest ecology, concrete measures were developed through an examination of the cross-country ski trail network, an assessment of snow reliability, a survey on the acceptance of individual trails, an analysis of transportation connections, and the development of an information system. The comprehensive catalog ranges from changes to the cross-country ski trail network and an information system to trail maintenance, regulations, closures, and recommendations for monitoring.

The GIS-KliSchee project provides high-resolution data on local snow potential using satellite imagery, climate measurement data, and regional climate model simulations. The data is integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) and linked with information on existing infrastructure, ecological priority areas, and economic parameters. This creates an expert system that enables the preparation of investment decisions and recommends different adaptation strategies based on snow potential. The project promotes the adaptability of winter sports tourism in Germany’s low mountain ranges to climate change and weather variability.
