for Medicine and Health and the Advisory Board for Law and Safety, these bodies now cover key pillars of the federation’s development. The goal of the initiative is to raise awareness of the CO₂ emissions generated by the athletes’ travel activities and to make an active contribution to climate protection and nature conservation. All teams and staff members—whether athletes, coaches, medical staff, officials, or administrative staff—receive a calculation of their mobility-related emissions and the corresponding CO₂ equivalent every six months. This results in a personal “climate budget,” which is invested on a voluntary basis in selected projects promoting sustainability, climate protection, and environmental conservation. The project is funded through a partnership model: the athletes themselves cover one-third of the costs, while the association and the Ski Safety Foundation each contribute one-third. This is in keeping with the principle of “Avoid, Reduce, Take Climate Responsibility.”

In July 2025, the Allgäu CleanUP Days took place around the Oberstdorf National Training Center, organized by PATRON e.V. Our Nordic combined teams also supported the project: Together with the SC Oberstdorf youth team, four World Cup athletes (Vinzenz Geiger, David Mach, Wendelin Thannheimer, and Julian Schmid) also took part in the cleanup effort. The event was complemented by a workshop offering plenty of information on waste recycling.

Together with the DSV, our partner M4Energy has launched the "skiEnergy" project to support youth development in clubs.
Here’s how it works:
All ski clubs can register for free. When residential or business customers sign up for an electricity and/or gas contract through the skiEnergy project, they can select one of the registered clubs. This chosen club receives financial support once a year based on the customers’ consumption: for every kWh of electricity consumed, 1 cent (0.5 cents for gas) goes to the selected club. This innovative model is designed to enable ski clubs to fund youth development and sustainable projects.

The “Event Inclusion Manager in Sports” project—or “EVI” for short—opens up more opportunities for people with disabilities in the sports job market and promotes greater accessibility and inclusion in sports. The goal is to integrate people with physical disabilities into sports organizations on a long-term basis. In September 2021, Snowboard Germany hired its first Event Inclusion Manager, and in 2023, it was selected by the DOSB for the second time to fill one of these positions. As a national governing body, SNBGER aims to continue being a progressive pioneer and serve as a role model for other federations. To implement this vision, the EVI project represents a meaningful step in the right direction.

A new era for freestyle winter sports was ushered in this fall in Berchtesgaden: Germany’s first landing bag facility was built at the national training center’s training complex over a four-month construction period. This new facility provides athletes in the Olympic disciplines of slopestyle, big air, and halfpipe with expanded training opportunities. Thanks to the air cushion, athletes can learn and refine new tricks safely and with minimal risk of injury. The landing bag does not require snow and can be used nearly year-round by athletes from the German Ski Association and Snowboard Germany. This represents added value for the training center and youth development—and an important investment toward making training operations independent of snow conditions.

As part of the “Certified Nordic Ski Rental” certification program, SIS has been recognizing ski rental shops that offer high-quality and safe cross-country skiing equipment since the 2013–14 winter season. To receive the certification, businesses must meet a series of requirements, including expert advice, a well-maintained selection of cross-country skis, boots, and poles, as well as professional fitting of the equipment to customers’ individual needs. Additional requirements include the option to exchange rental equipment free of charge, a storage facility for equipment that includes boot drying, the disinfection of ski boots, free ski waxing, and a money-back guarantee.

As part of the “Cross-Country Ski-Friendly Establishments” certification program, SIS has been recognizing cross-country ski-friendly establishments that meet specific quality and safety standards since the 2013–14 winter season. To earn this designation, lodging establishments must meet numerous requirements. These include a lockable ski storage room, a drying room for clothing and equipment, a waxing station, and a willingness to accommodate cross-country skiers even for just one night. In addition, staff must possess specialized knowledge of cross-country skiing, a special cross-country breakfast must be offered, and partnerships with ski schools and ski rental shops are required. In addition to the minimum requirements, at least three additional optional criteria must be met to receive the designation.

As part of the certification program, SIS has been recognizing ski resorts that meet specific quality and safety standards since the 2009/2010 winter season. The certification establishes uniform standards and provides guests with reliable guidance. An inspection committee of approximately 20 members evaluates the resort, a process that can take several days, depending on the size of the area. After a successful inspection, the resorts receive the respective certification for three years. Regular inspections ensure that the criteria continue to be met.

The 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf were not only a major sporting event but also a pioneering example of sustainable event planning. Ruhpolding holds a special place in the winter sports scene. The 28 World Cup events and four IBU Biathlon World Championships that have already taken place in this small town are only possible because everyone is committed to a common goal: attractive, well-organized, and environmentally and economically sustainable competitions. The Green Legacy Report for the 2012 World Championships comprehensively documents the sustainability efforts.

In addition to the lessons learned from previous events, the “Guidelines for Environmentally Friendly Major Sporting Events—Green Champions” and the resulting sustainability plan served as an important foundation for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. "DSV Mental Stark!" uses playful strategies to teach children and teenagers the importance of mental strength in sports, school, and life. Coaches are made aware of the importance of this topic. The program offers training sessions and exercises for on-snow or fitness training that promote social, emotional, and self-management skills. The training provides opportunities to build mental strength.

The goal of this project was to educate visitors to the “Fellhorn” ski and hiking area near Oberstdorf about the importance of environmentally conscious behavior—both in summer and winter—for the ecological stability of the area and the preservation of biodiversity. As part of the project, a comprehensive plan for environmental public outreach was implemented, along with the development of an environmental nature trail, a brochure, and an environmental guidebook.

During the project period, multi-day educational programs in natural settings were designed for winter and summer stays and carried out in a camp format with school classes and club groups. Through these immersive experiences in nature and reflective consideration of the sports activities carried out there, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the natural environment itself and how it interacts with those engaging in sports.

The French organization Mountain Riders is driving the development of eco-friendly ski tourism in France. Communication and information are central to its work. As one of many initiatives, it developed a series of short films in a comic-style format covering the following topics: energy, travel and mobility, water, waste, winter sports, and responsible behavior. The film series was translated into German and adapted—with figures and content—to reflect the context of German-speaking Alpine culture.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

This German-language journal for science and practice publishes scholarly articles from all disciplines that analyze skiing and mountaineering in terms of their development, structures, and prospects. It is aimed equally at ski instructors, academics, coaches, trainers, policymakers, and practitioners who require well-founded insights into issues relevant to winter sports. The goal is to transfer knowledge from all DSV areas of expertise to the winter sports community and society at large. “SKI & BERGE Wissen” complements the member magazine “SKI & BERGE” at the Haus des Ski in Planegg.
