National Baseline Study on Winter Sports in Germany — Comprehensive background information on German citizens’ participation in winter sports, including specific insights into consumer expectations and behavior.

Since 2012, the national baseline study on winter sports conducted by SIS and the German Sport University has regularly provided representative data on Germans’ winter sports behavior, as well as their expectations, needs, and travel plans. It includes telephone and online surveys with a total of 5,000 participants and offers valuable insights into market potential, target groups, and trends. The results help policymakers, associations, destinations, and companies make strategic decisions to ensure the sustainable development of winter sports.

Key Findings 2018

  • Demand for winter sports remains stable and high.
  • There are differences in participation rates across different age groups.
  • The choice of winter sport is determined by age, gender, and household income.
  • In the 2016–2017 season, despite weather fluctuations that resulted in a significantly shorter season and fewer days with snow, over 80% of winter sports enthusiasts were active.
